Developing Future Olympians for Team GB

Briton Engineering Developments Ltd takes great pride in the fact that a significant amount of Team GB’s Park and Pipe athletes got a start on Snowflex slopes in Yorkshire, Glasgow, Hampshire and Dorset. These slopes have produced a wealth of talented skiers and snowboarders, which the GB Park and Pipe crew have developed to a world class standard.

“People assume because we don’t have any snow you can’t go snowboarding, but you can. I rode a dry slope for three years before I even knew what snow was.” – Billy Morgan (Big Air Bronze medal winner PyeongChang 2018)

It is no coincidence that most of the ski and snowboard stars of Team GB had ready access to local dry ski slopes in their formative years. They had to start somewhere and learn the basics in a country with limited access to mountains and very little snow. The success in the recent Olympics has proven that it is possible for British athletes to perform at the same level as athletes from the winter sports powerhouse nations in Scandinavia, North America and Western continental Europe.

Whilst Team GB has had its best ever Olympic medal haul on snow, British dry slopes have long suffered from serious underinvestment and subsequent deterioration. As the overall global standard in snowsports increases many of the slopes in the UK have lacked the resources and investment to provide the world-class facilities that Team GB Park and Pipe needs in order to keep producing athletes of the highest calibre.

To continue developing future Olympic stars British snowsports desperately needs at least one centre of excellence like the ones built by Briton Engineering Developments Ltd around the world. Indeed such a facility is already in development and undoubtedly Team GB’s future prospects will receive a boost when the Snowflex® urban snowsports centre begins construction at the HDOne project in Huddersfield later this year.

Briton Engineering Developments Ltd of Holmfirth in West Yorkshire UK, have already built similar centres around the world successfully to enormous acclaim. Their ‘Snowflex’ centres are well known and praised internationally and incorporate all the necessary ‘trick’ features such as rails, jumps, kickers, quarter and half pipes, to develop future Olympians.

With the right investment Team GB could be training in facilities like this one in Noeux Les Mines, France

Snowflex® facilities are just the sort of amenity that snow sports and elite athletes are crying out for. All that is needed is the political will and the right levels of investment if success is to be built on from both the Sochi and PyeongChang Olympics in readiness for the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022!
